GED Testing Accommodations Request Deadline

 Attention GED® Candidates:

We have received notice that the deadline for submitting completed GED Testing Service® Accommodations Request forms to local Chief Examiners is on Tuesday, October 15th, due to the length of time needed for the approval process and the November 1st cutoff date announced by the GED Testing Service®.

To be accepted by our office, forms submitted by the October 15th deadline must be completed correctly with all attached documentation in order to be forwarded to the State Office and then by the State to the GED Testing Service®.

The approval process usually takes up to 30 days, however, the GED Testing Service® currently has a backlog of submissions.

If you need to request testing accommodations, you must do it as soon as possible.  Make an appointment with the local Chief Examiner as soon as possible to pick up the appropriate forms for your disability to take to your doctor for completion.

Remember that the current test series and all partial scores expire at the end of 2013.

Grenada Adult GED Testing Center Receives $5,000 Grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation

The Grenada School District’s Adult GED Testing CenterTM recently received a $5,000 grant from the Dollar General Literacy Organization to expand its adult literacy services.  Specifically, the grant will support the expansion of GED® testing from the current pencil-and-paper only testing to offer computer-based testing (CBT) as soon as possible this year. This expansion is especially important because the new, more in-depth GED® test series that will be released on January 2, 2014, will be offered only in approved computer testing labs across the nation.  The additional testing stations provided by this grant will also allow more first-time GED® candidates to test this fall.

Students Urged to Finish GED Tests Before 2014 Overhaul

Students Urged to Finish GED Tests Before 2014 Overhaul

Quick Note:  This article indicates some uncertainty about the cost of GED testing by computer. To clarify, computer-based testing (CBT) will cost $24 per subject area test ($120 for the entire five subject area test battery) in 2013 on the current (2002) test series.  In 2013, both the pencil-and-paper and the CBT versions will be available. Pencil-and-paper testing costs $15 per subject area test ($75 for the entire five subject area test battery).  Since October, we have been working with Pearson Vue/GED Testing Service to establish the CBT test option on the current GED test series at the Grenada Adult Education Center. Watch this website for news that the CBT testing option has launched in Grenada.

For 2014 on the new test series, testing will cost $30 per subject area test ($120 for the entire four subject area test battery). The 2014 test series will only be given on computer.

Memorial Donations

In the fall, GLAD received memorial donations in memory of Mrs. Kay Townes totaling $130.00. Mrs. Townes was a leader in our adult literacy council in Grenada for many, many years.

In January 2013, GLAD received memorial donations in memory of Senator John Keeton totaling $100.00. Senator Keeton’s widow, Mrs. Margaret Keeton, became active in adult literacy efforts in Grenada even before the founding of GLAD. Over the years, the Keetons have been benefactors of GLAD in many ways.

Our thanks to these donors for honoring the memory of these community leaders through donations to the Grenada League for Adult Development, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.

Donate Items for Our Recycling Fundraiser

Remember that we collect used inkjet and toner cartridges, cell phones, and small electronics to earn extra money for our projects and services. Drop items by the Grenada Adult Education Center during hours we are open. Carol Hecker organizes this project locally. A shipment of items collected in the fall and sent in earlier this month earned us $207!

FINAL Evening Class Registration Extended

Last night, Tues., Jan. 15th, was supposed to be the final opportunity for new students to begin late registration for our free Tuesday/Thursday evening classes.  However, the School District closed early yesterday due to icy weather conditions.  So, late registration has been extended through tomorrow night, Jan. 17th.  Anyone adult wanting to register should arrive a little before 5:00 p.m. (late arrivals will not be able to register) and plan to stay until 8:00 p.m.  Bring a valid government-issued photo ID.  Participants should be at least 18 years old and must be OFFICIALLY withdrawn from school.

If you are under 21 and have not been enrolled at the Grenada Adult Education Center since July 1, 2012, it would be a good idea to come by the front office during office hours (8 am - 3 pm, except for lunch) today or tomorrow and fill out a form so we can go ahead and get Last School Verification done in advance.

If you miss registration for the first spring session, our next open registration will begin in mid-March.

Remember that the current GED test series expires at the end of this year. The 2014 test will be more difficult and more expensive, so prepare now to succeed soon.  Share this with friends and family, neighbors, and church members!

Closing early...No evening classes tonight (Tues., Jan. 15th)

The Grenada School District is closing early again today due to weather. The Adult Ed. Center is closing at 1:45 p.m. and will not reopen today...so no evening classes tonight.  Evening classes will meet next on Thursday, Jan. 17th, at 5 p.m.

We plan to reopen at 8:00 a.m. tomorrow for morning classes, unless the Grenada School District is officially closed due to weather tomorrow.  Listen to local news outlets.  If the School District is having class in the morning, we will be having classes also.

Note about the weather....

Yesterday (Monday, Jan. 14th), the Grenada School District dismissed early at 1:45 p.m. The District is open for classes today.  Grenada is currently under an Ice Storm Warning until 6 p.m. tonight, but ice storms don't happen much more often than they do. Only time will tell if this is a non-event. Stay tuned.

If the Grenada School District dismisses early on a Tuesday or Thursday (days that we have evening classes), then evening classes that night will not meet.

If conditions grow hazardous after the school day ends, check the social media resources mentioned below. In that case, the Grenada ABE Director will make the call about that evening's classes.
You may also check Twitter at GrenadaAEC or this blog or
Facebook at Grenada Adult Education Center.
If we have internet access, they will be updated.
The Center's answering machine cannot always be reliably updated
if electrical power is coming and going or we are offsite.
