Grenada Rotary Club Donation

David Harbinson presented a $2,000 donation check
for GLAD from the Grenada Rotary Club to Valinda Smith,
Adult  Literacy Program Coordinator, on November 3rd.
Our sincerest thanks to the Grenada Rotary Club for their November 3rd donation of $2,000 to the Grenada Adult Literacy Program in support of our program operations budget which would have experienced a budget shortfall and resulting cutbacks for the 2014-15 fiscal year except for this donation and another received last month from an individual supporter.
GLAD has long enjoyed widespread encouragement from our community and this is just the latest example. Our ongoing thanks are due to the City and County leaders who support annual appropriations to keep our classes and tutoring sessions available and free of cost to adult learners. Local Rotarians have been significant supporters of the adult literacy program since its inception in the mid-1980’s. In the early years, they provided annual funds for the adult literacy program’s office telephone service so that tutors and students could reach us. Recently, they provided the gravel parking lot in front of our building in order to have adequate parking for students, tutors, and staff at the Grenada Adult Education Center. Now, they have shifted our 2014-15 program budget into the black.
We again thank them and our community for their faithfulness in meeting our program needs.

"See for Free" Event Scheduled at the Grenada Adult Education Center - FREE GED practice tests available

The Grenada Adult Education Center will be hosting a public GEDTS "See for Free" event for adults at 8:00 AM on Wednesdays and Fridays from Sept. 24th - Oct. 3rd.

This is an opportunity for adults to take each of the four subject area GED practice tests for FREE during this period, a $24 value since each of the four modules normally costs $6. Participants will be able to tell if they are ready to succeed on the actual GED test.

It takes about 4-1/2 hours to take all four subject area practice tests. Each practice test takes half of the testing time of its corresponding actual GED test module. The "GED Ready" practice tests are delivered via computer just like the actual test modules.

Calling in advance to schedule the practice test is required since computer seats are limited. Local adults may begin calling the Grenada Adult Education Center during office hours now to schedule their free practice tests for the Sept. 24th-Oct. 3rd event at 227-6101 or 226-7462.

Participants should be at least 18 years old and already officially withdrawn from K-12 school.

Adults should bring a government-issued photo ID with them to take the practice tests since it is important that information on their ged.com accounts must match their photo IDs. The same ged.com account will be used when each adult eventually takes the actual GED test.

All "See for Free" practice tests must be completed by October 3rd, when the GED Testing Service offer expires.

The GEDTS "GED Ready Practice Test Guarantee" expires 60 days after the individual's practice test date. So, if "GED Ready" practice test scores indicate "Likely to Pass" individuals need to take the actual GED test in each "Likely to Pass" subject area in October or November to take advantage of this offer tied to their "See for Free" practice test scores. (We only offer actual GED testing two mornings each month and adults schedule online at https://ged.com through their account.) Note, they are not offering the actual GED test for free, but only a free retake if they score "Likely to Pass" on the practice test but then don't pass the same module on the actual test on the first try and only if it is taken within 60 days of the practice test.

2014 "Teacher of the Year - Valinda Smith

Cindy Heimbach (left) shown awarding Grenada Adult Education Center's 2014 Teacher of the Year certificate to Valinda Creech Smith (right)

Valinda Smith has worked with the Grenada League for Adult Development (GLAD) for over 23 years. She has always volunteered extra time to the program. As the partnership between GLAD and Adult Basic Education has grown, she has taken on many new roles. In 2001, she became a GED Examiner and now is the Chief Examiner. This past academic year, she went above the call of duty. In the fall, she scheduled additional testing dates for our ABE students. In December, I think she may have had only one day that she was not involved with testing. This has taken much of her time. In 2013 with the new 2014 test approaching, she did everything she could to make sure that the Grenada Adult Education Center would be up and running in 2014 with the new test. She sought out grants to purchase computers and equipment needed for the computerized testing. This center was one of the first in the state to be ready to administer the 2014 test because of her diligence. She always strives to help our students have opportunities to test and to provide information to help them access these testing opportunities. For all of her hard work in the area of adult literacy over the years and especially for the hard work done this academic year, we are honored to name Valinda Smith our teacher of the year for 2014.

Four additional GED testing workstations installed

Thanks to our 2013-14 Dollar General Family Literacy grant, four new test delivery workstations were added to our Pearson VUE Authorized GED Testing Center (PVTC) today! We now have a total of six test delivery workstations in the lab. This has opened additional slots for April 16-17 testing that was full.  Each candidate schedules his own testing through his ged.com account.
